חִתִּ׳

חִיתִּית, חִתִּ׳(b. h. = חתתית; חָתַת) being broken, subdued; esp. dread inspired by superiors, fear. Gen. R. s. 34 (ref. to Gen. 9:2, compared with 1:28) מורא וח׳ חזרו (not וחתות) the fear and dread (of man) were restored (after the deluge), but subjection was not. R. Hash. 17a (applying Ez. 32:24 sq.) שנתנו חִיתִּיתָםוכ׳ those (leaders) who tyrannize the land of the living.Lev. R. s. 18; Koh. R. to XII, 5 (ref. to חתחתים, ib.) (read:) חִיתִּיתָהּ של דרךוכ׳ the dread of travelling befalls him.
